Full Time Food/Listings Editor:
Job Summary: This position's Food Editor duties include assigning, editing and writing food- and restaurant-related stories and reviews for the "Food and Drink" section of the newspaper, as well as locating art to accompany the stories. He/she oversees several special issues, coming up with creative concepts for them. He/she writes several daily posts for the Meal Ticket food blog, creating a mix of breaking news and creative content. This position's Listings Editor duties include maintaining the online listings database and overseeing the interns responsible for inputting listings. He/she assigns and edits the weekly "Agenda" column and contributes to writing "Agenda" picks. The Listings Editor, along with the Arts Editor/Copy Chief, coordinates the editorial internship program, selecting and training interns for the fall, spring and summer. The employee's primary duty requires the exercise of discretion and independent judgment regarding the editorial content he/she is responsible for.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Communicates the mission and demonstrates the values of the paper on a daily basis.
• Develops and assigns story ideas for all food- and restaurant-related coverage. Edits the weekly restaurant review written by our freelance critic.
• Writes several blog posts a day for Meal Ticket, with the goal of making it the go-to blog for local food and restaurant news. Posts photos and slideshows.
• Works closely with writers (both freelance and on-staff) to fine-tune and edit articles.
• Writes Feeding Frenzy, a weekly restaurant news column.
• Cultivates professional relationships with local restaurant figures and representatives.
• Maintains the listings database and oversees interns inputting listings.
• Helps coordinate the editorial internship program; hires and trains interns.
• Assigns and edits the weekly "Agenda" column.
• Writes several weekly "Agenda" picks.
• Oversees select special issues.
• Serves as a backup fact-checker on deadline days when necessary.
• Responsible for attending weekly editorial meetings.
• Other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Mastery of effectively writing and editing on a deadline basis
• Ability to multi-task and effectively apply creative talents to achieve optimal editorial success
• Ability to develop rapport, and adapt to the tendencies of individual writers and editors
• Familiarity with Philadelphia restaurant scene, prominent restaurant figures and food trends
• Solid understanding of food-related terms, culinary concepts, and global cuisines
• Knowledge of blogging practices and generating traffic to a blog. Familiarity with common blogging CMS, uploading photos, etc.
• Foresight to be aware of and report intelligently on important restaurant news with timeliness as a concern
• Ability to guide interns and provide feedback
• Attention to accuracy and judgment for inputting listings
