Current Openings:
Hello! We take edit-side interns specializing in news, A&E and food — A&E is full for the spring at the moment, but we're always taking applications if you're interested in being an intern at City Paper in the summer or beyond. We're looking for a few good men and women who:
- Can already write at a very high level, both technically and voice-wise
- Are funny, critical, opinionated, hungry, curious, mildly obsessive, perceptive, quick to learn, willing to confront fear of awkwardness
- A&E: Keep up with local music, arts, and other stuff going on in the city
- News: Are persistent, have an interest in city news and, ideally, have at least a little experience reporting for a college paper
- Food: Keep up with the local food scene and love trying new things, dig blogging
We're hoping to find people who can come in for at least a few hours on either Mondays or Tuesdays and a few more hours on one other day a week, but we’ll make it work for the right person. The baseline internship stuff is unpaid, as this is 2013, but longer freelance pieces are for pay and there are lunches every couple weeks where a staff member or other person of journalistic interest comes in to talk with you guys about pitching, freelancing, hustling, not pissing off your editors by accident — the for-real stuff about doing writing as a career that you may not get in school.
The Application:
This application is to be copied, filled out, and e-mailed to City Paper's arts editor and intern wrangler Emily Guendelsberger at emilyg@citypaper.net. Rolling consideration, but we operate on a vaguely semester-based schedule — please mention in your email whether you're interested in winter/spring, summer or fall. If you make the second round, I'll be in touch to set up an interview and an in-office fact-checking test. Thanks!
1. TELL US A STORY
Everybody’s got that one insane story they can dine out on; tell us yours in 300-400 words. If you haven’t racked up anything appropriately epic, just tell us something funny that happened this one time. This is a judgment-free zone.
2. WHO ARE YOU?
- What’s your name? Who are you?
- Are you interested in the news, A&E or food internship?
- Where are you from? What’s the Philly connection?
- Where do/did you go to school? What is/was your major?
- What do you love to write about?
- Do you have any video/photography/technical/miscellaneous skills or areas of expertise we should know about?
- When you go out, what do you do? Where do you go?
- What are you hoping to get out of this?
3. PROSPECTIVE A&E INTERNS ONLY: GIVE AN OPINION
(News skip to section 4, food skip to section 5.)
Pick one thing from each column and tell us in 150 words why you like or dislike the artist or movie. Be as specific as possible, and there are no right answers—this isn’t about whether your tastes and ours match up, it’s about how well you can express yourself (and entertain us).
3A. Artists:
- AC/DC
- Man Man
- Frank Ocean
- Bruce Springsteen
- Creed
- The Dismemberment Plan
- Kurt Vile
- A group/artist of your choice
3B. Movies:
- Knocked Up
- Sex And The City (either/both)
- Annie Hall
- Rocky
- Zero Dark Thirty
- Crank (either/both)
- Pulp Fiction
- A film of your choice
3C. NOW LIST (NOT EXPLAIN!) YOUR TOP 5:
- Writers you enjoy reading when it comes to arts stuff — music, film, pop culture, whatever.
- Movies you've seen for the first time in the past 365 days
- Funniest jokes/scenes of all time
- Books you read last year
- Concerts you’ve ever been to
- Non-music events you’ve attended in Philly
- Philly media sources you read for arts/culture/music
4. PROSPECTIVE NEWS INTERNS ONLY: DO IT BETTER
(Food, skip to 5. A&E, skip to 6.)
4A. What's a story going on right now in Philadelphia that you think isn't being covered enough (or well enough), and how would you cover it differently if you were a staff writer at a paper? Tell us in, say, 300 words.
4B. ...And what's another one? Same deal, but in 100 words.
4C. NOW LIST YOUR TOP 5…
- Philly media sources you read for news
- Useful local Twitter feeds
- Interesting neighborhoods that exist in Philadelphia
5. PROSPECTIVE FOOD INTERNS ONLY:
5A. Describe in 150 words either the best or the worst thing you have ever eaten.
5B. NOW LIST YOUR TOP 5…
- Places you go for Philly food info
- Places to eat/drink in Philly on a very small budget
- Places to eat/drink in Philly on an infinite budget
- Restuarants/bars that opened in Philly in the past 365 days
What’s your availability weekdays? And when are you hoping to start?
7. BONUS POINTS
Feel free to link to your clips, photo galleries, vimeo accounts, twitter feeds—whatever you think will help us make up our minds. (We'd particularly like to see clips.)
Again, send this application back to emilyg@citypaper.net for consideration! Thanks.
