The American shad first hit the culinary scene as the go-to dish for George Washington and co. while they occupied the Delaware riverfront. Then it fell off for a minute due to polluted waters. Now it's all trendy again. This scrappy herring likes to make its noise in the spring, so what better time to celebrate "our" kind of fish than at the Fishtown Shadfest. For this year's bash, El Camino Real will offer their spin on shad while tunes will be provided by indie acts Buried Beds and Grandchildren. Youngsters get their own arena to run wild while adults get the Kenzinger Challenge Run: a scavenger-hunt-type romp through the neighborhood with stops for trivia testing, obstacle courses and suds.
Sat., April 28, noon-6 p.m., free ($20-$25 registration for the Challenge Run), Penn Treaty Park, Delaware Avenue and Beach Street, fishtownshadfest.net.
