Under the thematic banner of "Protect Your Pets," Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia (CFAN-KP)'s adoption/education event this Sunday will be the largest of its kind in our city's history. "As someone who bragged that Philly was the best city in the world, I was shocked and disturbed when I visited the animal control facility to adopt a dog," says CFAN-KP founder Garrett R. Elwood. "I could not believe that over 30,000 animals enter the shelter every year and was saddened to discover most don't make it out alive." Feeling that he had to do something, he started his small activist group based on the premise that citizens — pets included — should demand more of our city. "We focus on making Philadelphia a safe place for shelter animals and want to see the day when euthanasia is not used for population control. It's difficult in a major metropolitan area, but we are making progress." In addition to matching pets with forever homes, With Love: Super Adoption Day will hone in on animal welfare and rescue issues, with a focus on pet health insurance, companion animals, micro-chipping, licensing, spay/neutering and animal response. Woof.
Sun., May 22, noon-4 p.m., free, Piazza at Schmidts, 1015 N. Second St., 215-467-4603, phillynokill.org.
