Once the workshop of the world, Philadelphia’s main manufacturing these days involves turning factories and warehouses into luxury lofts. Bucking this nationwide trend of industrial decline, the people behind The Head & The Hand Press saw an opportunity for a locally based publishing house where writers are treated as artisans, while their books are given respect as handcrafted treasures. “We’ve seen a movement where people want to be connected to not just what they buy, but who they buy from,” says founder Nic Esposito. tying his project to Philadelphia’s past with a Kickstarter-funded writers workshop on Frankford Avenue. The Head & The Hand Press will celebrate its launch this Friday with a night of storytelling and music.
