Kevin Chick and Alex Suha bring their clown show — already acclaimed in London, Bilbao, Portland and Chicago — to Plays & Players for a two-week run. Do Not Push was developed partly as an answer to students asking Suha, “Where can we see theater like this?” says James Kiesel, artistic director for GDP Productions. “There’s an unsatisfied niche there, and GDP’s all about satisfying some niche markets, especially in the physical-theater realm. Our staples in the past have been burlesque, combat and puppet-mask work, so adding some clown to that mix is a no-brainer.” Do Not Push features mime, musical improvisation, acrobatics, brute clown strength and a big red button, and is extensively revised each time it’s mounted. “It’s a super-personal journey for the performers,” Kiesel adds, “as good clowning has to be.”
