Is there really a band called I'd Rather Be In Philadelphia? We don't want to ruin the surprise.

Paul Grillo, the nationally and internationally known Philadelphia poet, passed away yesterday from cancer complications. His books include Manhattan Spiritual, Vibes of the Saints, and Skin of Doubt. Along with being known for his vibrant readings (at Bacchanal, Painted Bride) and film appearances (Jo Tiberino’s The Museum) he was a renowned teacher at Temple and West Catholic High School for Boys (he taught Kenn Kweder and me, A.D.) as well as a highly regarded collage artist. He will be missed. Services are slated for Sept 9. Also, Fri., Aug. 30, at the Tiberino Museum Complex at 38th and Hamilton at 6 p.m. are the annual services for the late great painter Ellen Powell Tiberino. The two were old friends, so we expect to see familiar friendly faces at both services.
Tomorrow’s Decontrol/Blessed Muthas show at Dobbs should be an old Philadelphia punk celebration, especially if guys who wear white do a surprise pop-in dressed in black. That’s Fri., Aug. 30.
Anyone keeping track of Philadelphia matchmaker Steve Ward’s troubles — a secret audiotape where the VH1 Tough Love star offers a “call girl” (such a ’30s term) a role on his show in exchange for some not-so-tough-love — here’s an update from Radar On Line. The gossip site claims that another tape with the call girl finds Ward trashing his network for their lack of promotional skills (the show has been sinking in the ratings) and calling VH1’s other programs “garbage.” He’s right, but he probably shouldn’t diss a network right before the start of Tough Love season six.
The date is in for Little Nonna’s, the newest restaurant from the Queens of 13th Street (Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran) and that date is Wed., Sept 4. Little Nonna’s will be an old school red gravy Italian affair with its interior design leaning toward cool camp.
Anybody who went along with the post-Citizens Bank show gossip from Britain’s Daily Mail, that Justin Timberlake was caught at Sigma Sound Studios with another woman, got suckered. The DM Is renowned for printing "scandalous" photos of stars with their lesser known siblings and this series of photos was no different. The lass in question, whom the recently married Timberlake was hiding from the paparazzi was Caroline Timberlake, his sister. Big doy.
When Philly MC Montana Blak does the I Love Hip Hop Show, Sept. 1 at Voltage Lounge and Hookah, it’s a chance for viewers to get to know the dapper rapper behind the upcoming new album, Commere Chill Music (due in September) and the even newer From the Dirty 2043 (early 2014 with producer Calvin Miller).
Whoopi Goldberg will get Temple’s School of Media and Communication’s Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award Oct. 17. Anderson Cooper got one a while ago as did Matt Lauer.
Since no one is biting on an After Earth series, SyFy has gone forward with another filmed-in-Philly epic, this one the successful (but kinda old? 1995 old?) Terry Gilliam-directed 12 Monkeys flick that is currently being developed into a television pilot and a series. Charles Roven and Richard Suckle from Atlas Entertainment — part of the Universal studio film’s production teams — will exec produce the whole magilla-gorilla starting in November.
Twerk. Twerk. Twerk. When Diplo takes part in this weekend’s Electro Zoo rave in the New York City area, he’s looking for all the butts around the world to go up then down for what he’s calling his shot at the “world record of having the most people twerking at the same time.” You have to be 18+ to twerk on stage, so be that. Email Diplo for stage time: moc.liamg@olpid4krewt.
WHOWHATWHERE: Replacements/Guns ’N’ Roses bassist Tommy Stinson and the aforementioned Mr. Kweder hung out with ex-Philly jock Anita Gevinson for a reading of her You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio… My Wild Rock ’N’ Roll Life at A.K.A. Music. While getting engaged at Francoluigi’s the other night, it sounds as if Tony Luke Jr. might have been talking business with Leo Rossi. The star and director of the gay Mummers movie Queens for a Day just nailed down William Forsythe (he was in the Luke/Rossi flick The Nail: The Story of Joey Nardone, for a role as an Irish person. Before his opening gig with John Mayer at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, American Idol Phil Phillips stopped by Q102 FM at the Clear Channel Complex, to hang and play. So did, Iration (Radio 104.5), Lawson (Q102), Passenger (Mix 106.1) and the R&B-hop supergroup TGT (Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank) hit up WDAS.
