It is just us or is it hard to imagine a time before the South Philadelphia Tap Room graced the corner of 15th and Mifflin? Maybe it's the fact that SPTR is located within stumbling distance to our secondary HQ or perhaps it's because the bar has become nothing less than a neighborhood institution in the 10 years that it has been open.
Well folks, this weekend SPTR is celebrating its ten year anniversary with a three day long blow out kicking off tomorrow night. We chatted with SPTR chef and wayward Meal Ticket contributer Scott Schroeder to talk about what this celebratory weekend has in store.
"The theme is past, present and future," Schroeder tells us.
Friday will be a throwback to the early days of SPTR. Longtime fans might remember a totally out there menu featuring wild and exotic meats and a beer selection that, well, let's just say doesn't really measure up to what the Tap Room is pouring today. Food specials will include $5 sliders, Newbold spuds, wild boar burritos, vegan lion (!!!) and a testicle preparation of some sort. On the drinks front there will be black and tans with O'Reilly Stout and Sierra Nevada all served in frosted mugs. The evening's entertainment is coming by way of SPTR quizzo hosted by sous chef Mark Regan and Johnny Dolo. Think you know the Tap Room? There's only one way to find out.
Saturday marks the fifth anniversary of Scott Schroeder at the Tap Room and to celebrate Scott has lined up a menu of five burgers with ten special IPAs. Some of the burgers on menu include the New York Mexican cheeseburger with pineapple, ham, cheese, avocado and jalapenos, the Big Mark (upgrade available to Super Big Mark) and a patty with shaved red onions, beer mustard and smoked cheddar. Be on the lookout for hop-heavy favorites like Russian River Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder, Founders Harvest and Lefthand Warrior IPA.
On Sunday SPTR is tackling the future and rolling out a new menu at 5 p.m. Schroeder was a little cagey about the details but told us that the menu will be smaller and rotate more often similar to the set up at American Sardine Bar. Schroeder fans will be happy to know that he plans to be spending more time in the SPTR kitchen. Oh and that polarizing house-made ketchup? Scott is working on a new recipe.
So anyway, get to SPTR this weekend and celebrate. We'll be there for sure.
