Gozo Poderoso

Their country’s social infrastructure may be collapsing around them, but the Colombian duo known as Aterciopelados sounds like it hasn’t a care in the world on Gozo Poderoso ("Powerful Joy"). With its mix of Latin rhythms, techno-pop and surf-sounding beats, singer Andréa Echeverri and bassist/arranger Hector Buitrago bring something both buoyant and potent to their fifth album (and first to get a major push in the States). From the sexy, smart opening track, "Luz Azul," to the haunting "Chamanica," the songs flow seamlessly together. The intricate production works well with the often-spiritual lyricism of the songs. And holding it all together like verbal super glue are the slyly seductive vocals of Echeverri, who growls and purrs in equal measure. Traditional cumbia, salsa and accordion-led vallenato intermingle with electronic beats, tape loops, bossa nova rhythms and straightforward pop. Aterciopelados (the name, courtesy of Simone de Beauvoir’s writings, means the "Velvety Ones") are superstars in their homeland and, for good reason. Their music personifies all the things that make Latin rock fun. You’ll never miss the English.
