Funny how the deepest recesses of Americana can be neglected by U.S. bands, then rendered dead-on by Canadians. Oh Susanna does just that. After two releases of murder ballads, singer-guitarist Suzie Ungerleider and her cohorts explore a full range of hurt on Sleepy Little Sailor (Catamount). Ungerleider’s got a voice as steady as any Nashville belter, with little of the histrionics. The closest she comes to overselling the song is on Otis Redding’s "I’ve Got Dreams to Remember." Sleepy Little Sailor lacks the buzz of discovery that accompanies a wholly original sound — the chorus of "River Blue" is eerily like The Wallflowers’ "6th Avenue Heartache" — but it taps into a common longing. Even when augmented by cello and piano, Oh Susanna nails the minimalism of melancholy. Ungerleider knows what it’s like to waltz alone with a whiskey and too many memories.
