Broken Hips

Rock/Pop

Virginia's Broken Hips sound the way a heat mirage looks on an upcoming bend of road: shimmering, bright, a little eerie, and gone into thin air once you get too close to figure out what it was you were staring at. Their songs are so slow in tempo; they're paralyzing. Waiting for the snare to snap is like waiting for that first beer. You know it's coming, and will be on time, but you want it now. The Broken Hips deliver the goods at their own tranquil pace. If you're impatient, they might drive you crazy. The basic four-piece of Tom Brickman, Phil Murphy and husband and wife Bryan and Jess Hoffa provide plenty of atmospheric musical layers, all hauntingly beautiful. Jen's musical saw adds a raw, spooky voice. An extended cast of backing musicians provide violin, organ and drum kit. Who's coming up to sit on the tiny Tritone stage? You'll have to go and see for yourself.

Tue., May 21, w/ Shards, Tritone, 1508 South St., 215-545-0475.
