Baldwin Brothers

When Baldwin Brothers' Cooking With Lasers (TVT) arrived, I slapped the mailman. After Bacon Bros., Nelson and what Dennis Quaid fronts with his bro Randy on drums, the thought of configurating Baldwins appalled to the point of violence. So after finding the Indiana quartet doesn't consist of Alec or Stephen and hearing their plush, funky Rinocerose-meets-Steely Dan electro bossa-vibraphonic live sound and smart-ass lyrics, I was relieved. Despite being wiseacres ("Are You There Margaret? It's Me God," "Somebody Else's Favorite Song"), the B-boys' jazz-jive lounge aesthetic comes through loud and loving without being fatally bruised by sarcasm (that which destroys Weezer). These Fender Rhodes scholars are smart enough to have their "Urban Tumbleweed" tones tickled by the equally eerie/incandescent art-funk likes of Miho Hatori, Dave Trumfio and 2002's boogie-bosses-du jour, Gorillaz. At least they didn't bring in Billy Baldwin.

Fri., June 14, 9 p.m., $17, with Stanley Jordan, North Star, 27th & Poplar sts., 215-922-LIVE.
