Dominic Duval

Jazz

In the eyes of discerning free jazz freaks, only William Parker's outré-rhythm rumblings compare to that of frenzied bassist Dominic Duval. Under the aegis of avant-garde labels Leo and CIMP, the downtown-dwelling ensemble-leading Duval (who's played with Cecil Taylor, David S. Ware, Trio X and Ivo Perelman) doesn't use the bass as percussive partner or underpinning pulse. Rather -- as witnessed on The Wedding Band, Under the Pyramid or the most recent Asylem -- Duval rapidly taps, fingers and strums within the improvisational activity of his collaborators like he was playing tenor sax. More akin to a Sam Rivers or James Blood Ulmer, Duval doesn't play within the usual confines of fractal this or arco that. He is also into the string quartet sound, leading bands like C.T. String Quartet and the Dominic Duval String Ensemble. The latter will be essayed as Pyramid this Monday with violinist Jason Kao Hwang, cellist Tomas Ulrich, violist Ron Lawrence and Duval tearing the catgut out of his treated Hutchins bass.

Dominic Duval and the Pyramid String Quartet, Mon., June 17, 8 p.m., $12, Tritone, 1508 South St., 215-545-0475.
