July 5-11, 2002 musicpicks Metalheadz Album Tour
It's time for more drum 'n' bass history to go down in Philly, courtesy of the Substitution crew. As jungle's first superstar and icon (and mastermind behind the Metalheadz label), Goldie permanently changed the face of d 'n' b. Most significantly, Goldie's debut 1995 full-length, the sinister and soulful Timeless album, is a sonic portrayal of the inner-city struggle for survival, and this soundscape, a soothingly melodic journey into spliced-and-diced breakbeats, is so captivating it will make you lose track of time. Goldie himself rarely refers to his dark, deadly, atmospheric sound as "drum and bass." Instead he calls it "inner-city ghetto music." Also at Transit on Saturday, brace your torment-loving body for a rare and heavy mindfuck through the soul-blackening, ultra-dark hardstep jungle of U.K.'s Doc Scott, one of the godfathers of d 'n' b, a co-founder of Metalheadz, the owner of 31 Records and the ruthless architect behind Ghostface Killah. Plus, don't miss the lyrical intensity of MC Rage. Aside from the other rockin' and jockin' local d 'n' b DJs, the downstairs features funky house and breaks, and the upstairs will keep the beats bumpin' smooth with a solid array of hip-hop. With Goldie, Doc Scott, MC Rage, Kaos, Armen, Starchild, Art Cuebik, Mannifest, Magnum, Continuous Solution, J-Messinian, Mis-Ty, MC Armanni Reign, MC Sharpness, Imri, Mass, Hen Loc, Summerjoy, Lina, Tone, DJ Boss and Cyzum, Sat., July 6, 10 p.m.-6 a.m., $15 before 10:30, $20 after, 18 to enter, 21 to drink, Transit, 600 Spring Garden St., 215-925-8878.
