Shipping News

You have to hand it to the Shipping News; they aren't treading water. Sure, guitarist-vocalist Jeff Mueller and bassist-vocalist Jason Noble are entangled in that incestuous Louisville/Chicago axis of musicians and it would be easy for them to coast on the merits of their Rodan lineage. Easy, but the halls of the indie rock retirement home are already littered with too many artists living off their rep. After releasing two albums of densely layered, cerebral rock, Mueller and Noble, along with drummer Kyle Crabtree, released a trio of limited edition, experimental EPs, Carrier, Sinking Bridge, and the just-released Variegated. The smaller, less conspicuous format meant the band wouldn't have to overthink or deal with the anxiety of making a full-length, and could try to make songs in ways they normally wouldn't, and have some fun in the process. (Like Sonic Youth's SYR series, the EPs could be an audio sketchbook for the next full album.) The end result of their exploration is a breath of fresh air in a style of music that can easily become formulaic.

Sun., Sept. 29, 9 p.m., $8, with The Secession Movement and Apparatus Engine, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888.
