Tribal Council

Bored with the usual hangouts? Try a powwow. This weekend, The United American Indians of Delaware Valley will host the annual "Fall Festival Powwow," which promises to be a celebration of culture featuring traditional dancers, singers, drum-players and storytellers. This nonprofit organization was established in 1975 and represents the remnants of local tribes and Native Americans who have come to the Delaware Valley. The Powwow is an opportunity to experience not only American Indian life and culture, but also ethnic food such as buffalo burgers, Indian fried bread and corn soup. Over forty vendors representing over 26 different tribes hailing from South Dakota to North Carolina will be present, selling everything from turquoise jewelry, dolls, pottery, moccasins, beadwork and dream catchers -- all souvenirs of American Indian vivacity. Plus the event will attract some well-known figures: John Nicholson from the Bureau of Indian Affairs will be on hand, as well as former mayor Ed Rendell. As Walter Anderson, head male dancer of the festival said, "Our hope is that the Powwow shows a better representation of American Indian life and sets better goals for the Indians of the Delaware Valley."

Fall Festival Powwow, Oct. 18-20, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., $3-$5, Fairmount Park, Memorial Grove, Belmont Avenue and Belmont Mansion Drive, 215-574-0850.
