March 27-April 2, 2003 artpicks Asians Misbehavin'Michelle Myers, fresh from rocking Ladyfest this past week as one half of the spoken-word duo Yellow Rage, steps up to the mic this weekend, rhyming and reeling through her experiences as an Asian American. Joining Daniel Kim and Anula Shetty to reprise their sidesplitting, groundbreaking Fringe performance, Asians Misbehavin', as part of the New Edge Performance Series, Myers raises awareness of cultural stereotypes and attacks oversimplification of the Eastern way of life, all with her signature hard-hitting delivery. And that's one way to get somewhere. Her justified fury is counterbalanced by the magnificently earnest comedy of Dan Kim who, as a graduate of MIT ("in English Lit," he adds perplexedly) is perfectly placed to explore the twin quirks of Korean childhood -- strict discipline and ambition. Completing the trio, poet and writer Anula Shetty tracks the hidden emotional turmoil brought about by the secrecy -- and impeccably starched respectability -- of her Indian family. At times riotous, the show educates without simplifying its themes, and stays true to the punchy aesthetic of Asian-American culture, still forming new modes of expression that put post-post-colonial concerns and talents well and truly on the radar.
