April 17-23, 2003 musicpicks Kevin BurkeA reference point for Irish fiddling, Kevin Burke has lived in Portland, Ore., for some 20 years. Before that he was raised in the Irish expat community in London where musicians from all parts of Ireland gathered in the pubs. This exposed him to a much broader range of regional styles than he would have seen if he'd actually grown up in Ireland. The breadth of mastery was put to good use early, first as a member of Christy Moore's band and then taking Tommy Peoples' place in The Bothy Band. These two groups were key to the success of the Irish traditional revival that bubbled up in the '70s. Since then Burke has been part of Patrick Street, Open House and the Celtic Fiddle Festival. Recently he has come to be re-enchanted with the joys of unaccompanied playing. This Saturday, the Green Willow organization brings us Burke in an acoustic coffeehouse setting, the closest thing to having him drop by for a session in your kitchen. Mon., April 21, 7:30 p.m., $5-$15, Buzz Ware Village Center, The Highway, Arden, Del., 302-798-4811.
