Dan Fishback "Bad Canary"
One Track Mind

West Philly/Brooklyn anti-folk duo Cheese on Bread is such a happy marriage of snark and bliss, of nerdy introversion and pop comment, that we sort of wanted to hate Dan Fishback for going solo. Turns out we're just a bunch of spazzes. CoB is still together—just got done with a monthlong tour, actually—so it's OK to admit we're digging on Fishback's solo debut, Sweet Chastity.

His perspective is one of wonder and pathetic humor, always considering the hypothetical ("If I could play piano, I would have emotions") and the sexually hypothetical ("I'd be a slut if I was hot"). And then there's "Bad Canary," an angsty, sarcastic Liz Phair love/diss track. The Blowjob Queen's recent absorption into the pop matrix is a source of great contemplation for Fishback. He parodies her guitar-hump album cover with his own and then incorporates a half-dozen melodies from Guyville and beyond. The oddly familiar vignettes are tweaked and twisted: "Every time I see your face I cannot feel my arms or legs." Besides fanboy disillusionment, "Bad Canary" is also a personal story of confused gay love and soul searching, positioning Fishback in an exile not far from where Phair was back in the day.

"Bad Canary" isn't currently on www.myspace.com/danfishback , probably because Liz would get pissed.
