I did some disturbing things this year to save money. I paid for two weeks' worth of SEPTA rides with small change. I bought Christmas presents from the Dollar Crazy discount store. (Hey Aunt Beth, hope you like the Karl Malone school folder.) But that's just because I was saving up for New Year's Eve. Here are six boozy events totally within my price range.
Let's Boogie Down with Baby 20069 p.m., $10-$15, North Star Bar, 27th and Poplar sts., 215-684-0808
Watch comedy troupe Secret Pants brutally murder Old Man '05. They'll go onstage around 11 p.m., debuting new skits before ringing it in at midnight. Get happy at 6 p.m. with half-price drafts and well drinks.
New Year's Eve at Tir Na Nog9 pm., $10, Tir Na Nog, 1600 Arch St., 267-514-1700
Thanks to Tir's modest cover, you'll have plenty of cash to get wasted and pretend you know Gaelic. Watch BackTalk perform and enjoy a champagne toast with free hats and noisemakers. Protestants only. I kid, I kid.
Explosion Into 20068 p.m.-2 a.m., $10, Club Ulana's, 205 Bainbridge St., 215-922-4152
This party features 15 rave-ish decksters, including Atomic Babies and DJ Seraph. There's a $2 PBR special and a free midnight toast. It's BYOG, so bring your own glowsticks.
Penn's Landing FireworksMidnight, free, Festival Pier, Columbus Blvd. at Spring Garden St.
The Party on Ice event at RiverRink costs 25 bucks, it's nonalcoholic and designed for families. You're broke, you're an alcoholic and your family hates you. Solution? Spring for a few dozen Sparks, stand on Front Street and enjoy the show.
Where's My Pager Party9 p.m., $10, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888
Two floors of hip-hop and silk-screened 40-oz. bags? Oh dig! The DJs will be spinning the classicsyou just have to polish up that white-boy two-step. Stick around for the free toast at midnight, where many an aforementioned 40 will be popping.
The Fishtown Formal7 p.m.-2 a.m., free, Johnny Brenda's, Frankford and Girard aves., 215-739-9684
Enjoy this coverless event by guzzling $3 beers and sucking helium balloons. Good news: The kitchen will be open. Better news: There's none of that package-price BS, so you can a-la-carte it up until one in the morning.
