Top 5 Burger Joints

1 Good Dog Bar and Restaurant
224 S. 15th St., 215-985-1918

The best of the burger servers, Good Dog dishes up one sumptuous hunk of meat. An aerial view of either the Roquefort-stuffed Good Dog Burger or Traditional Burger, both served on toasted brioche, makes the burger look dainty. Its six-inch-thick side profile, however, puts a grin on the faces of its hungriest eaters. Served with a side of signature sweet potato fries, this combo is unbeatable.

2 Copabanana
344 South St., 215-238-1512

The original Copabanana has been a staple of the South Street dining experience for years, in both its everlasting Mardi Gras atmosphere and award-winning food and drink offerings. Choose from its plethora of burger selections and toppings: Copa (Monterey Jack and mild green chilis), Capri (goat cheese and olive salad), Monte Carlo (mushroom and cheddar) and add a side of trademark Spanish fries for extra flair.

3 Sassafras Cafe
48 S. Second St., 215-925-2317

Looking like a French cafe but tasting like an American bar, Sassafras adroitly morphs class with mammoth proportions. The dim lighting, high, carved wood ceilings and European artwork maintain a relaxed and sophisticated environment while you chow down on your grilled lamb or buffalo burger, served on a Kaiser bun.

4 Nodding Head
1516 Sansom St., 215-569-9525

While recognized for its award-winning brews, the Head also boasts a tempting arsenal of menu options. Burgers are served on Le Bus Bakery striata rolls with homemade mayonnaise and a variety of toppings. If gorging on sauteed steer doesn't suit your moral taste buds, the kitchen cooks up some mean vegan options as well.

5 New Wave Café
784 S. Third St., 215-922-8484

Far enough outside the clutches of an unrelenting weekend crowd, New Wave avoids most of the South Street commotion while staying within walking distance of the action. An obnoxiously loud bar scene makes for a sometimes difficult dining experience, but selections like the Angus burger, a healthy eight-ounce slab of meat with your choice of cheese, onions or bacon on a Kaiser roll, makes up for the headache.
