Jetlag Travel

As the days get shorter and colder in Philly, I find myself dreaming of traveling to far-off locations. Luckily for my budget, I've been appeasing my wanderlust with Jetlag Travel's series of faux travel guides. From their ridiculously captioned photographs and traveler's tips to their maps, restaurant reviews and author bios, these spoof guides to fictional countries in Eastern Europe (Molvanîa), Southeast Asia (Phaic Tan) and Central America (San Sombrèro) offer hilarious tours of "places you don't want to go." Who knew armchair travel to the "birthplace of whooping cough" could be so amusing?

Matty Charles

A couple years ago a guy I had a crush on made me a mixed tape of some lovely songs. I totally fell for him and made him be my boyfriend. On the mix was a song by Matty Charles and the Valentines. I was certain they must be pretty well-known but it turns out they were just a band that played for free around the corner from my boyfriend's house in Brooklyn. Their music is at once old-timey and refreshing. Charles' voice is strong and pretty, accompanied by his melodic guitar picking. A few weeks ago I thought maybe we should go catch one of those free shows and bf said, "Oh, he doesn't do that anymore — he's playing big venues in the city now."

Angry Nintendo Nerd

Here's some good lunch break entertainment. My friend, James Rolfe, local movie editor, director and writer, first created the "Angry Nintendo Nerd," a satire on old-school NES games, as a joke in 2004. Nearly two years later, James — who stars as the foul-mouthed main character — decided to post an episode on the Internet, and within two months his Web site (screwattack.com) had reached over one million hits.

Singer-songwriter

John Waters

In preparation for a drag ball last night, I watched two films from the John Waters collection: Pink Flamingos (1972) and Female Trouble (1974). What I was not prepared for, however, were the obese drag queens, senile old ladies in bird cages, senile old ladies in infant cribs, chicken rape, public urination, foot fetishists, the largest nipples I have ever seen, too many turds, mother-son oral sex, voodoo furniture licking, them cunt eyes and the gesticulating anus. My mind has never felt so violated and satisfied at the same time.
