Debut of Tröegs Mad Elf 2007
Fri., Nov. 16, 6-9 p.m., $3-$6

Christmas is fast approaching, signaling the arrival of festive holiday beers. Harrisburg brewer Tröegs will debut its always-anticipated Mad Elf on draft this week at the beer-geek-beloved Grey Lodge. Ruby-red in color from being brewed with honey and cherries, the 11 percent ABV Elf will nudge even the Grinchiest drinkers toward rosy-cheeked jollity. Grey Lodge Pub, 6235 Frankford Ave., 215-825-5357.

Taste of Philadelphia: Market Tours
Every Wed. and Sat., 10 a.m., $8.95-$14.95

Walk the 114-year-old Reading Terminal Market on the trail of classic Philly foods like cheesesteaks, hoagies and soft pretzels. Food writer (and CP contributor) Carolyn Wyman relates the history of the market, as well as the stories behind the delicious edibles that send Philadelphians straight to the cardiologist after lunch. Reading Terminal Market Info Desk, 12th and Filbert streets, 215-545-8007.

French Beer Dinner at Chick's
Mon., Nov. 26, 7 p.m., $30 before Nov. 21 or $40 after, plus tax and tip

Biere de garde, a beer originating in the Flanders region of northern France, was traditionally brewed during cold months so the working man could slake his thirst come summer. Sample strong, spicy brews from artisans Brasseries Theillier, Saint-Sylvestre and Thiriez under the guidance of famed importer Dan Shelton. Six craft beers will be partnered with cheese and charcuterie for a real, regional experience. Chick's Café & Wine Bar, 614 S. Seventh St., 215-625-3700.

Native American Thanksgiving Dinner at White Dog Café
Sun., Nov. 18, 6 p.m., $45 plus tax and tip

Join members of the Lenape tribe and chef Andrew Brown for a holiday meal of indigenous foods. Traditional tastes like roasted pumpkin and winter squash soup and honey- and chili-glazed duck breast will be followed by herbivore-friendly smoky seitan pinto bean hominy stew. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Lenape's efforts to acquire former homelands. White Dog Café, 3420 Sansom St., 215-386-9224.

Beef & Beer Auction for Gryphons Rugby Club
Fri., Nov. 16, 8 p.m., $25

Unlike American football, rugby has no pads — but it does have ribald songs to bellow at the post-match drink-up. Learn a few verses to yell along with the ruggers from gay-friendly Philly Gryphons RFC at this fundraiser. A heaping buffet for carnivores and veggies alike will be augmented with both non-alcoholic and very alcoholic beverages. All proceeds from the event will go toward the club's goal of attending the rugby Bingham Cup in Dublin, scheduled for June 2008. "Friday is a drinking day, Saturday is a rugby day, are we happy? You bet your ass we're happy! Tra la la la la la la la!" William Way Center, 1315 Spruce St., 215-732-2220.
