Q: My parents and I are trying to find a company or restaurant in the Philadelphia area that makes and sells authentic, fresh English pork pies. I'd sure like to surprise my mother with some this Christmas and hope somebody can help me in my quest.

A: Alas, even after harassing many members of the British expat contingent in Philly, we turned up nary a local pork pie. So sorry. But we did find a few spots that serve up some lovely other-meat pies. The friendly staff at the Dark Horse Pub (421 S. Second St., 215-928-9307) will gladly serve you a beef shepherd's pie topped with mashed potatoes ($10), chicken and mushroom pie ($12), or steak and mushroom pie ($13). Hop in the car and speed south to Delaware's Matilda's Australian Restaurant (801 S. College Ave., Newark, Del., 302-737-4800), where pork sausage rolls wrapped in puff pastry are $8.99, and a meat pie with beef, onions and gravy in a pastry crust is $9.99. If that pork pie for mom is an absolute must, you can call (212-691-4194) or fax (212-691-7423) an order to Myers of Keswick in Greenwich Village (myersofkeswick.com). They produce all sorts of authentic British pies and pastries — and they'll deliver right to your door. Cheers!
