The Fleshtones

I've seen the Fleshtones only three times — once in NYC in 2000, once in Baltimore a few years later and the third time a couple of weeks ago at Johnny Brenda's. Regardless of my relative Fleshtones virginity, I can tell that they are one of the most enthusiastic, well-orchestrated, exciting rock-'n'-rollers around today. The performance included crowd participation, onstage push-ups, instrument swapping and congo lines (yes, congo lines). For those who've never heard of the Fleshtones but like rock 'n' roll, watching these guys will make you instant fans. They're just that good.

10th Street Laudromat

Did you ever think that a Laundromat could be a little more than just a place you do laundry? Well, 10th Street Laudromat (10thstreetlaundromat.com) at 10th and Ellsworth streets always has art exhibited on the walls by up-and-coming artists, loud music and lots of color. They regularly host art openings with DJs, drinks, food and, best of all, the noise of spinning laundry. I was there for the last event and we were dancing on the laundry machines. You have to see it to believe it. I love this place!

Ruth Naomi Floyd

Have you ever heard jazz that goes through you to your very soul, taking you to a place that is deep, intimate and divine? I have. I like discovering something that is done in such excellence that you have to just take a moment to admire the quality, technique and skill. Is it possible to infuse music that is pure jazz with an unmistakable gospel message and still keep the integrity of both? Listening to Ruth Naomi Floyd answers that question with a resounding yes. Read all about her at ruthnaomifloyd.com.

Message boards at urbanbaby.com

Oh, I know. You're too cool to read a message board dedicated to having and raising kids. Well, I'll admit it, I'm addicted. Things on this board can quickly move from mundane to hilarious to ugly, especially with the more inebriated nighttime crowd. Watch the breast feeders square off against the formula feeders, the stay-at-homes battle the working moms, and everyone gang up on anyone still misguided enough to cop to supporting the president — all with a level of humor and viciousness that comes with the security of knowing that your comments are anonymous.
