TV viewers got a heavy dose of political campaign propaganda this weekend, when Gov. Ed Rendell and Gov. Bill Richardson appeared on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace to spar over Democratic presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Rendell has been solidly behind Clinton, while Richardson, the governor of New Mexico and a former presidential contender himself, came out recently in support of Obama. He had served as Energy Secretary and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under Bill Clinton, and raised the Clintons' ire with the move.
Right now, Obama leads Clinton by 121 delegates; he is ahead in the popular vote and has won more states.
Both Rendell and Richardson agreed that the campaigns have gone negative. They discussed the Obama campaign's accusation that Bill Clinton was practicing McCarthyism by attacking Obama's patriotism.
"The Obama campaign tries to have it both ways. They say the campaign is too negative and then they go out and turn an innocent remark — Bill Clinton was saying what a lot of us feel. ... If they want to tone it down, don't accuse someone of McCarthyism," said Rendell.
Meanwhile, Rendell still can't seem to live down those remarks he made last month to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "You've got conservative whites here and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," the governor said.
Rendell defended his remarks on Fox by saying that Obama agreed with him, but conceded he may have created some collateral damage for the Clinton campaign.
Oliver Stone for Obama
Obama, it seems, has surpassed Clinton as the darling of the Hollywood left.
MoveOn.org, the liberal online organization promoting good government and denouncing corporate greed, is hosting a contest for a 30-second ad disseminating a new message on why voters should pick Obama, whom the group has endorsed.
The deadline is April 1 and the winner will receive a gift certificate good for $20,000 in video equipment. The ad will air on the Internet and on national TV.
The jury panel consists of various luminaries in the entertainment biz: Oliver Stone, Ben Affleck, Steve Buscemi, Matt Damon, Jesse Jackson, Moby, Heather Rae, Eddie Vedder and author Naomi Wolf.
Who's On First?
The Liberty City Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club endorsed Larry Farnese in the race for the 1st District senate seat at its Monday night meeting. Most of the gay community's support had originally gone to incumbent state Sen. Vincent Fumo because of his long-term support for gay rights, but Fumo, under federal indictment for fraud and tax evasion, is facing health problems and is not running for re-election.
Anne Dicker and John Dougherty are also running for Fumo's seat, and wanted the endorsement.
Dougherty had challenged Farnese's nominating petitions in Commonwealth Court, but lost. Now Dougherty is appealing the lower court's decision to the state Supreme Court.
Dicker was recently endorsed by Philly for Change, a grassroots organization she helped found, as well as EMILY'S List, the Women's Campaign and Philly Now. Dougherty's been endorsed by numerous labor groups and, just this week, the Fraternal Order of Police.
Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal, a longtime Fumo supporter, said the Liberty City vote was "a nail in the coffin of Anne Dicker. She has lost her base. It highlights that there is no confidence in her campaign."
Dicker responded, "Mark Segal has lost his base and has no credibility."
Dicker, who has been open about her bisexuality, said she was not surprised that she did not receive the endorsement, citing internal politics, although she said she was respectful of Liberty City's decision.
This and That
Gov. Rendell was the keynote speaker Tuesday night at the annual meeting of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Young Lawyer's Division held at G lounge in Center City. Scott P. Sigman was installed as the group's new chair.
The event was co-hosted by the Young Advocates for Mural Arts, a group of young professionals who support the city's Mural Arts Program.
Sigman, a moderate Republican, currently practices at the firm of Bochetto & Lentz. He is planning a run for district attorney next year.

Thanks goodness we have this high level political discussion and Anne doesn't have to resort to asking Segal to stick his head in gravy.
Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.
But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. “Carpe diem” (harvest the day).
I think Hillary Clinton see’s a beautiful world of plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it’s time America. Do this for your-selves, and your children’s future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.
You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don’t want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care that you have already paid for. So they can continue to make more immoral profits for them-selves.
Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!
As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.
Hillary Clinton has been out manned, out gunned, and out spent 2 and 3 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.
If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON’T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.
The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.
I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton’s offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama’s place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.
The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.
Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.
“This is not a game” (Hillary Clinton)

Obama does not take money from lobbyists.Period.
Of course the Republicans want to run John McCain against Hillary Clinton, he actually has a chance of winning. I mean she's already publicly approved of him, saying that he's "passed the commander in chief threshold."
Her main campaign point is the experience that makes her ready to lead on day one. Well, if her few years qualify her, what is John Mccain, overqualified?
And can't you just see them on the stage in the first real debate.
He'll turn to her looking all older, dignified, and war heroish, and say," Mrs. Clinton, when you claimed, solely for political gain, to have come under enemy fire in a war zone you dishonored the very real sacrifice of tens of thousands of our brave military men and women who really have come under fire defending this country. You dishonored those military men and women who have been injured or paid the ultimate price for this country."
And he'd be right.
Game, set, and match McCain
Just a little run down: The Born Alive Infant Protection Act:
Senator Obama's contention concerning the Born Alive Infant Protection Act was that he wanted to maintain the rights articulated within the Supreme Courts ratio of Roe v Wade. Yet Infanticide and providing medical treatment for born babies bares no correlation with women's rights. These babies were products of live birth abortions - which were mistakenly born as such - and therefore providing equal rights to them so as to prevent them from being killed, in no way infringed upon a woman's right to choose.
That choice had already been exercised at the 'abortion decision making' stage. The birthing process ensured that it had moved on from the choice of whether to have an abortion or not. What is crucial is that there is no correlation between the Born Alive Infant Protection Act which should have been signed into law, and Obama's contention of limiting abortion. The physical separation of the fetus from the mother ensures this to be the case.
Being aborted alive and shelved to die in soiled utility rooms is infanticide. Introducing this legislation at a federal level would have enabled these fetus' to have constitutionally protected rights to equal protection, whether or not they were desired or wanted. The Bill therefore engaged rights to prevent live birth aborted babies from being simply left to die. A horrible and degrading prospect for anyone to comprehend.
Senator's Clinton, Kerry recognized that a woman's right to choose stops at delivery. Logically, and legally this is correct. The State already has an overwhelming interest through the Supreme Courts rulings at viability - clearly once delivered, the baby has locus standi. There is no maternal-fetal conflict because the fetus is no longer in Utero and therefore has legal personhood. Other stances taken were for instance that of NARAL of whom went neutral on the issue, and abortion enthusiasts who publicly agreed that fighting this Bill would appear extreme.
In Illinois however, Senator Obama ensured that the Bill repeatedly failed. Since he left the Senate in 2005 it has been passed into law at the Federal Level providing equal treatment for born babies. Senator Obama didn't merely stop at voting against the Bill. He went much further. As chairman of the Senate hearing committee in Illinois to which the Bill was sent, Obama stopped it from getting a hearing. Babies were still be shelved at this point and were dying as a consequence of this treatment - or lack of.
So not supporting the Bill using the issue of Abortion must be a position which is clarified by Senator Obama - how does banning infanticide interfere with abortion?
The same language was used in the Illinois draft version at federal level, as was used at State level. Therefore the principle and purpose behind the legislation was exactly the same. I am perhaps in the middle of pro choice and pro life. I believe there should be great ethical respect for both the woman and the fetus and striking this balance is a task which the law (considering forced Cesarean cases for instance) has failed to achieve in the past. Nonetheless this Bill was designed for the prime purpose of providing a fundamental right to born babies - who now have legal rights. It was to ensure that the sanctity of life remains an ethical and legal principle that is maintained, but yet managed to skillfully refrain from infringing the woman's rights as an autonomous agent. The rights would not be conferred upon the fetus until it was born - therefore avoiding any conflict of interest in utero.
Voters must be made aware that the purpose of the Bill, was not designed and would not therefore have achieved a curbing of the right to chose. It protected the right to life, whether or not the baby was desired. By refraining to enact this, Senator Obama effectively voted for infanticide.
Medical treatment and the protection of human life once a baby is born should not be sacrificed.
