Obama For President

Who we choose

RSS

Published: Apr 16, 2008

Michael T. Regan

Just over a year ago, before John McCain's campaign for the presidency seemed (rightfully) doomed to humiliating failure and before it was (absurdly) resurrected, McCain had this to say, to The New York Times, about the war in Iraq:

"I have no Plan B."

The candidate has, of course, made numerous frightening statements about this country's current sin. He complains now that his "100 years" quote has been taken out of context, but even if we put it aside, we still have other, disconcertingly childlike sentiments — like, "We're succeeding, I don't care what anybody says. I've seen the facts on the ground" — to suggest that McCain views foreign policy not as a careful business in which costs and benefits must be measured and the greater good pursued, but as a forum for boosting some all-important national ego. Such steadfastness in pursuit of honor may help make admirable individuals, but it's no way to run a country, and we fear that, were McCain elected, many more good volunteers, and quite possibly some conscripts, as well, will have to die for his misconceptions (and remember: Foreign policy is supposed to be this man's strength).

Fortunately, the Democratic Party has two candidates just itching to keep the Republican nominee from the White House, both of whom are far superior to its recent offerings of John Kerry and the 2000-vintage Al Gore. But while it's great to see a wealth of talent in a party that was, just four years ago, left for dead, the time has come to choose just one, and we here in Philly (!) get a substantial say in making that choice. With some regret, City Paper is recommending that voters reject Hillary Clinton in next Tuesday's primary. And we're enthusiastically endorsing Barack Obama for president.

We should acknowledge up front that one reason for supporting Obama at this stage is a strategic one. The candidates are not coming in to Pennsylvania tied at zero; Obama has a non-negligible lead, and while Clinton could still pull out a win, the more likely outcome of a successful showing by her in the Keystone would be a long, drawn-out primary that ends with Obama victorious, but weakened. Philly's choice, then, is not so much between Clinton and Obama as it is between Obama and more of this primary. Meanwhile, McCain tours the country making his twisted case, and no one concentrates on refuting it. Pennsylvania would do well to end this undercard, and make itself the launching site for the fight against McCain. Call it the war against perpetual war.

If you feel, however, that a strategic vote is too cynical for you, never fear: Even without strategery, Obama should still be regarded as the preferable candidate. His track record is more assuring, and, at this moment when the country seems prepared to rebuke the Republican party, his ceiling so much higher.

We respect Hillary Clinton. We admire her grasp of policy and procedure, and, should she be elected, we like her chances of making major changes to America's obscene health care system (in fact, in an election where there are few actual policy differences between the candidates, Clinton's advantage on health care is an important one, and a real reason to consider choosing her). It should also be noted that she's made great strides in a society where women are still not comfortably received as executive figures, of breaking down those boundaries, and establishing new, better norms.

But we have major concerns with Clinton, too. She is, in many ways, a creature of the late 1990s and early 2000s — a Democrat who believes herself to be naturally in the minority, and who has to play defense by running to the right when threatened. She exhibited this tendency when she staunchly supported the war in Iraq, and she's exhibited it several times in this campaign. And though it's not necessarily Clinton's fault that she reacts this way — she was raised in that political environment — there is a legitimate concern that her name and history could mobilize the conservative base and take the country back to that unfortunate era.

Which brings us to Obama. It's true that some supporters of the Illinois senator can go a bit overboard at times, and also true that Obama is, in fact, not the messiah — witness his disappointing "Annie Oakley" comment, or the more general fact that, upon arriving in the Senate, Obama transformed from a progressive community activist to a broadly mainstream politician, in terms of his voting record.

But to say that someone isn't the messiah doesn't mean that he can't offer something new and different, and we believe Obama does. On questions of foreign policy — where the president's agenda is implemented most directly — Obama seems to be of a new era, in which Democrats can exhibit "toughness" not by offering fake tough talk or advocating for more war but by standing for diplomacy and the pursuit of peace, even when doing so seems politically risky. Not for nothing, but electing a candidate so steadfastly committed to cooperation could do wonders for America's troubled international relationships (his success in managing a huge national campaign — which he'd never done before — helps ease our concerns about his "experience" in these matters).

On domestic policy, there's not as much space between the candidates. But in assessing what they'd mean for the country, it's worth considering the role of communication in politics. It's often observed that Obama is good at making speeches, but the more salient point about him is that he's philosophically advanced. He has shown the ability, when faced with challenges like the Jeremiah Wright controversy, to stand his ground, explain himself, and appeal to our better angels — in that case, taking a stage in Philadelphia to speak honestly of the racial divide, and, yes, to treat Americans like adults.

There was a time in this country, quite recently in fact, when it would have been hard to imagine such a politician succeeding — the cable news shows would have ignored the significant pieces of his speech, instead splicing a few excerpts in with clips from Wright's sermons. And indeed, that's what the news shows did. But today, as information continues to democratize, it's becoming possible for a leader to truly bypass the filters, make reasoned, well-intentioned arguments, and ask Americans to make this country a better place. It's a place we want to live. And more than any politician out there today, we believe that Barack Obama has a chance to take us there.

THE MEDIA LIKE AP-CNN AND MSNBC ARE SELLING OUT AMERICANS
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2008/04/05/ap-covers-obama-avoiding-churchs-pastors-essence
Associated Press Playing defense for Obama Karen Hawkins and Christopher Wills of the Associated Press quilty of Wright-wash, Hawkins and Wills avoid any mention of the Black Liberation Theology that forms foundation belief system of Trinity United Church. AP pair purposely avoided any mention of inflammatory items in weekly bulletin articles published by the Church.

Nowhere in the story was any mention of the Church's belief system, which was outlined by McClatchy's Margaret Tavel on Mar 20.

Obamas church pushes controversial doctrines. Jesus is black. Merging Marxism with Christian Gospel may show the way to a better tomorrow. The white church in America is the Antichrist because it supported slavery and segregation. Those are some doctrines that animate the theology at the core of Obamas church.

Wright said basis for Trinitys philosophies the work of James Cone, founder black liberation theology movement out of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. Particularly influential was Cones book, Black Theology & Black Power. Cone wrote that the U.S. was a white racist nation and the white church was the Antichrist for having supported slavery and segregation.

TCC’S Pastors Page section, the Rev. Wright gave two pages to Hamas TERRORIST MOUSA ABU MARZOOK. The column originally appeared in the Los Angeles Times, which came under heavy criticism for running it. Among Marzook's many whoppers: A number of political parties today control blocs in the Israeli Knesset, while advocating for the expulsion of Arab citizens from Israel and the rest of Palestine, envisioning a single Jewish state from the Jordan to the sea. CAMERA.org wrote at the time that "that no Israeli parties in government advocate the 'expulsion' of Arabs; one calls for voluntary transfer."

TCC Pastor's Page section, written by TERRORIST SYMPATHIZER AIL BAGHDADI. Among other things, Baghdadi wrote I must tell you that Israel was the closest ally to the White Supremacists of South Africa. In fact, South Africa allowed Israel to test its nuclear weapons in the ocean off South Africa. The Israelis were given a blank check: they could test whenever they desired and did not even have to ask permission. Both worked on an ethnic bomb that kills Blacks and Arabs. The KKK, on its worst day, never accused the ethnic groups it hated of attempting to concoct a "white bomb. Rev. Wright not only allowed these hate-filled diatribes to appear in TUCCs bulletins but supports as does Obama.

Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden would be praying for an Obama victory because it would help the militants win in Iraq. Article by Citizen Wells 3/08,
Obama has a dual citizenship with Kenya. Obama is an anti-Israel, pro-pan-Arabian Islamic-socialist who has ties to Marxist Libyan President Muamar al Gadaffi, and a Syrian tycoon, Antoin Rezko, Saudi Arabian Scheiks and Rezko's "close friend" Nadhami Auchi, the one who gave Obama fundraiser money (and helped to buy his mansion): Iraqi billionaire, global arms dealer, Nadhmi Auchi, was Baathist best friends with Saddam Hussein, and the main financial backer (from funds stolen from Oil for Food Program0 for Saddam's - Iraqi -Saudi oil pipeline, and who stood trial with Saddam Hussein in 1959 for conspiring to assassinate Iraqi President Qasim.

Also marxist Nicaragian President Daniel Ortega is on the front line supporting Obama for the revolution of changes and then there is hard core anti-Israel, pro-Palestine PLO Enforcer Rashid Khalid, (Obama was on Kalidi's Woods Fund. Obama was a memb er of the Woods Fund with communist domestic terrorist Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground who bombed the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol among other things and their organization raised money for anti-Israel programs, and also AAAN, for Arabs and then there is especially Kenya - where in August 2007, Obama went to Kenya to support his E. Germany communist educated cousin Raila Odinga for Kenyan Presidential election, who claims coincidentally to also be a Christian who signed NAMLEF and other pacts wutg radical muslims who set churches filled with Christians on fire, and macheted them in the streets, causing a political and religious mini-civil war over the MUO.

all of Obama's mentors, buddies, political affiliations, organizational memberships and all of his hard core militant muslim family members, like his brother Abongo (Roy" Odinga who hates America, and their communist grandfather who ran with Russia and hated America, not to mention his socialist connection to his profound childhood mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, a member of the Communist Party, CPUSA, and Obama's endorsement by the Black Panthers. Obama titled his book "Audacity of Hope," after Pastor Wright's sermon about the need to destroy capitalism and the middle-class at the hands of the rich white people and the west.

OBAMA LIES IN PENNSYLVANIA AD
It's unfortunate that Senator Obama is using false advertising to explain why he can be trusted to do something about energy prices. In his ad, Obama says, I'm Barack Obama, and I don't take money from oil companies or lobbyists, and I won't let them block change any more. Obama has been the recipient of more than $220,000 from the oil and gas industry just since as of Feb/08. Two of Obama's campaign bundlers are also CEOs for oil and gas companies, per his campaign Web site? Obama needs to answer to VOTERS about his dealings with one of his largest contributors Exelon, a big nuclear power company that he cut deals behind closed doors protecting them from full disclosure in the nuclear industry. Exxon, Shell, and others are among his biggest donors

Obamas record shows he infact did support the war when he got to the senate, voted twice against bringing America's troops back home. He voted for war appropriations giving our money to Halliburton and Blackwater where Texas woman, was gang-raped by her co-workers at a Halliburton/KBR camp in Baghdad, His latest bit of posturing S 433 allows the Bush Administration to suspend any troop withdrawal, if not suspended, keeps the troops in Iraq for a long time to come

Obama said he goofed on votes angered fellow Democrats in the Senate when he voted to strip millions of dollars from a child welfare office on Chicago's West Side. But Obama had a ready explanation: He goofed! Also announced he had fumbled an election-reform vote the day before, on a measure that passed 51 to 6. The next day, he acknowledged voting "present" on a key telecommunications vote. He stood on March 11, 1999, to take back his vote against legislation to end good-behavior credits for certain felons in county jails. "I pressed the wrong button on that," he said. Obama was the lone dissenter on Feb. 24, 2000, against 57 yeas for a ban on human cloning. "I pressed the wrong button by accident," he said. But two of Obama's bumbles came on more-sensitive topics, he backed legislation to permit riverboat casinos to operate even when the boats were dockside. The measure, pushed by the gambling industry and fought by church groups whose support Obama was seeking, passed with two "yeas" to spare -- including Obama's. Moments after its passage he rose to say, explaining that he had mistakenly voted for it.

Obama would later develop a reputation as a critic of the gambling industry, and he voted against a similar measure two years later. But he was clearly confused about how to handle the issue at the time of his first vote, telling a church group that he was "undecided" about whether he backed an expansion of riverboat gambling. And, months earlier, he had voted in favor of a version of the bill.

Re 'Compassion & Faith Forum' --- Obama said..."This is no longer a Christian Nation...we are a country of Budhist, Hindu, Muslim, & Atheists". When Obama is in the White House....will he try and change Washington D.C.'s monuments that quote Judeo/Christian scripture? Also, why is he so interested in shaking off the Judeo/Christian influences that have shaped our nation?

"why is he so interested in shaking off the Judeo/Christian influences that have shaped our nation?"

he was making an observation, we are no longer a predominantly White Anglo-Saxon Protestant nation.

It's a fact. Get used to it and get over it.

Please let's STOP trying to slap the flaws of religious leaders onto our candidates.

Popular evangelical leaders have, in recent years, called for the assassination of Hugo Chavez and blamed Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans' moral failure. We don't say all followers of these leaders are bigots or fruitcakes.

Former Cardinal Law of Boston knowingly hid (or reassigned) abusive priests. This doesn't make every Boston Catholic guilty of such a thing. Nor does it require every Catholic to apologize or leave the church.

In South Jersey we have a rabbi who killed his wife so he could pursue an affair. This does not mean the whole synagog should close or walk out on their institution.

In each case, the LEADER is at fault, not the followers. FAITH is bigger than a particular priest, pastor, rabbi, etc. All of us who worship accept that. We are not to be condemned just because of a mistake that the "leader" makes. We look beyond it at the holiness that is there.

So move on with Rv. Wright. He was another flawed leader. He is not the first. And he is not Obama.

the points about hillary and obama being better than kerry and gore as candidates sounds accurate.

however, obama's track record is suspect because it does not exist. he has not taken on a single big challenge that would benefit the country, in his career, even if that effort failed. his senate and illinois record is mediocre.
obama has swayed too many people who are impressed by style,at the cost of substance.
this is a time when the economy is in the doldrums and iraq is the worst disaster in US history. hillary is a better choice to meet the challenge.
there are other serious problems with obama.he called her the 'democrat from punjab'.and he said 'hillary is untrustworthy'. it was arrogant and condescending on his part, and insulting to hillary and asian indians, when he is an unknown and untrustworthy quantity. he has manipulated race, guns and bible.
hillary is smart, pragmatic, tough and the most credible in the race in terms of proposing and executing a policy that will revive the economy and extricate the country from the health care and iraq mess.
if hillary looses, i will abandon the democratic party,

Good grief, observer, have you observed how many times you posted that same rant?

Tip - your tone will be much better taken if you:

A) Use half way decent grammar, but at the very least capital letters.

B) Don't post the same post 15 times. That is referred to as spamming, and is very impolite.

April 20th 2008 3:16 PM | Posted by: Smuhamm
That person that posted the rants multiple times, sounds as if he or she is full of fear, suspensions, and hatred of others religions, race, creed and class, Why, does those things matter when so many people in THIS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are indeed diverse and all are not the same, all do not worship or believe the same, neither do we all desire to live the same it is call FREEDOM. Free from Mandates that say I have to do as you say or how you determine would be RIGHT for me. How could you, when you do not know me neither have you bothered to get to know me,my beliefs, my religious kind of worship, my gender, my creed, my class, wouldn't you want to know and listen to my concerns as well as try and see how we can come together for real solutions. To desire all America and it's melting pot of people come together on 1 common cause, to live free of fear, to provide for our selves and families to have a right to adequate health care to, educate our children to compete with the coming high tech world that God gave us to oversee and now to straighten out. We are tired of the divisions, the hatred, the bigotry, the misunderstandings based on what is in 1 persons heart due to lack of knowledge. WE MUST COME TOGETHER NOW, WE MUST STOP THE TEARING DOWN OF EACH OTHER, IT TIME TO LIFT EACH OTHER UP IN LOVE, LOVE CONQUERS ALL INCLUDING POLITICS,LAWS, RULES REGULATIONS, IDIOCYNCIES ETC. IT IS TIME TO STOP WITH THE SUSPICIONS AND FEAR, IT IS TIME FOR PEACE ON ALL ENDS. Obama 08
