Criticized for its method (unlimited online voting) and its madness (a lack of recognition on the graffiti and breakdancing front), the Philadelphia awards show is returning for a second year. Say what you will, but awards founder Dwayne Muhammad — who also started the Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Awards in 2007 — seems to be working hard to bring the city's scene together to promote peace, unity and respect, while recognizing those old and new who grinded their way through 2007 to 2008. The winners are determined by a monthlong process that starts with open nominations followed by three weeks of voting that ends the night before the awards. Categories range from the standard (best new artist, best male/female artist) to offbeat (most popular MySpace artist, best female promotion team). This year's nominees include female MC Hedonis tha Amazon, barber shop Mecca, singer Carol Riddick and lyricist Reef the Lost Cauze (pictured), who is set to perform. Whether or not you agree with how it all goes down, at least someone is trying, right?

Sat., April 19, 8 p.m., $30, Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St., 412-401-3919, phillyhiphopawards.com.

Thanks for trying, but next time, don't make it so obvious that they are fixed!

Hi David -

Fixed is a strong word! The words I wrote don't point to an obvious fix, but more calls out the unlimited voting and void of 2 hip-hop elements that make the awards questionable. Thanks for peeping the article. Good to see hip-hop feedback here. FYI - Here are the list of full winners: http://forum.215hiphop.com/showthread.php?t=6098&page=2

The Philly Hip Hop Awards were created to showcase the Hip Hop and jeweler scene in Philadelphia PA. The PHHA is here to award those Cheaters who helped pay for a foundation with there admission, for the Present and Future generations to stand on. We will also give out awards to those who paid the $900 for there VIP table This will be a Star Studded Affair, All guests will arrive and walk The Red Carpet lined with Videographers and Interviewers, then enter into The Convention Center for what will be known as "The 1st Annual Fixed Hip Hop Event Of The Year" Big ups to all those cheaters…..

These awards were so fixed. I mean come on how the hell is someone going to win best new artist that was never even heard of. and Tommy what??????Yeah there is No Question when he last dropped anything. we all no the answer to that hello are you peolpe crazy. there are so many talented artist in the city that did not even get nominated. Like West Phily Blake, Naam Brigade, and so on and so on. and then you have artist that were nominated and I am quite sure they had madd votes and they did not win best new artist. Come on Tone trump is like all over the city and the internet you mean to tell me that he did not get best new artist. as well as Kwei. all I am saying is this is why our artist go to other big cities to do there thing. the love in Philly is fake.
don’t get me wrong when I say this I love Gilliebut dam your already doing big things as well as freeway why are you even invovled in the awards give some of these new comers a chance. its seems to me that is you had the $900 for the vip table you left with ans award. and if you had the bling on you left with more than one. call it what you want . but I call it how I see it FIXED,FIXED,FIXED……..and to those who really deserved to win you know who you are. keep your head up and hold it up high. ans always remember that cheaters will always be cheaters. but once a winner always a winner………Good Luck to all who were left out to dry….you are all winners in my eyes.. KISSES, LOVE THE DIMONDGIRL

Gillie hasn't done anything really on a national level; he's really a grassroots artist in every since of the word because the Philly streets are really feelin' him NOW. Not sure if they could have said that about some of the other artist mentioned.

Nice to see Black Thought win lyricist of the year. 215hiphop.com for best website...

But yeah.....cheaters is a very strong word. but.... if anyone had to pay for an awards, then they are sorry!!!

The thing I had to question was the large number of receipants. Even the grammy doesn't allow everyone to speak. The music should have been the emphasis...IMO.

For me, it was good to see Hedonis win the award. She is one of the most deserving hip hop artists in this city.... she grinds and has definitly paid her dues.

Nice to see Bahamadia, School D, and Frankie Smith (Double Dutch) take home awards...

Glad to see Tone Trump, Gillie, and some others receive awards as well... I wish Reef and Reed Dollaz could have one, but who knows..maybe next year...

I voted in the awards because I am A freak for clothing. I voted for Mike roller for best clothing line and my people voted for Donnation. Some one told me aboutMerk Material and I didnt know to much about them but Tone Trump had the hottest shirt on in the place and it was by Merk Material so alot of people had it on Dutch of Major Figures Jack frost team and alot others. I checked out there store on 52nd Market they do custom stuff. Now I can see how they won hands down.
