PRISM Quartet ends its season with a rumble. The Philly/New York saxophone foursome will present a concert based entirely on music for baritone sax, the lowest-register variety of the instrument. There'll be premières by Roshanne Etezady and PRISM's own Matthew Levy, but there's also an existing repertoire of work in this specialized genre, with some heavy hitters among the contributors: Martin Bresnick (a student of Ligeti), Michael Gordon (of Bang on a Can fame), Sofia Gubaidulina and Olga Neuwirth have already written for baritone sax quartet or combinations of baritones, including solos and duets. All of these diverse composers will be represented on the program, which runs in conjunction with charity auction/exhibit HeartWorks, benefiting the Mazzoni Center. It will be especially interesting to hear from Gubaidulina, a masterful sculptor of sound, whose deeply expressive work spans the Shostakovich era and post-Soviet scene in Russia music.

The baritone saxophone is not the lowest-register variety of the saxophone family. There are four that play in lower registers. They are the Bass Saxophone, Contrabass saxophone, the Eb Tubax, and the Bb Tubax. All are in production and available for purchase at various dealers throughout the US and Europe
