It may seem that my refusal to go see Converge, whom I consider to be hands down the best heavy band to romp around the planet, makes no sense. Converge defies the expected trajectory: Although they've been around for nearly 15 years, they're apparently still getting better. Actually, their last three records (most recently 2006's No Heroes) are so excellent that in comparison, the previous kabillion records they released NO!, make that the yotta-kabillion records that any heavy-ish band released are rendered irrelevant. Guitarist Kurt Ballou's recording smarts, as demonstrated on recent records by Disfear and Torche, is at its brilliant best in the context of Converge's recent hot streak. The concoction of Converge's music with the esophagus-is-probably-falling-out-of-singer-Jake-Bannon's-soundhole is actually the perfection of heaviness. So, as I am convinced that there is no way that live sound at any club can do Converge the justice that their records do, I will be a gigantic baby and not go. I think I hate live music. Am I a fantastic selection for writing live show picks or what?
