James Ulmer

Opening reception Fri., Feb. 3, 6-10 p.m., free, through Feb. 26, Part Time Studios, 2031 Frankford Ave.

[ visual art ]

His professional training at UArts notwithstanding, James Ulmer has a splendid, self-taught quality about him. The local artist's drawings and prints depict imaginative vignettes, full of boats and planes and houses, on materials like notebook paper and cardboard. Though his works are often funny, they also demand to be taken seriously. In the exhibit "Planar Split," Ulmer shares the walls with Lance Simmons, whose ink-on-paper works examine the medium "sci-fi folk art." Dick Neff and Charles Cohen will join them to play music at the opening reception.
