Stop-motion has come a long way since Gumby. The artists contributing to “Harsh Realities: The Art Of Stop-Motion” — a new group exhibition at Rowan University — use surface alterations, cinetropes, puppets, toys and, yes, clay to explore the theme of human struggle. Don’t miss Martha Colburn’s retro magazine cutout animations that make wild political statements to experimental music.

Opening reception Thu., Sept. 6, 5 p.m., exhibit through Oct. 4, free, Westby Hall, 201 Mullica Hill Rd., Glassboro, N.J., 856-256-4521, rowan.edu.
