David Schulner’s two-person play reveals a seemingly ordinary love story’s 50-year arc in 90 minutes, from awkward first date to final bedside goodbye. In Bi Jean Ngo and Griffin Stanton-Ameisen’s sincere and incisive performances at Theatre Horizon, however, the familiar relationship ups and downs become an extraordinary adventure all taking place in Oona Curley’s cleverly transforming bedroom set. Director Meghan Nicole O’Brien’s production asks, “What is love?” Is it the Jewish term bashert, “a love that is meant to be”? Shakespeare said that “the course of true love never did run smooth,” and neither does this union, but their travails prove not only entertaining — especially for Valentine’s Day weekend — but worthy of serious rumination, preferably with a loved one.

Through Feb. 17, $25-$31, Centre Theatre, 401 DeKalb St., Norristown, 610-283-2230, theatrehorizon.org.
