In this week's cover story, Daniel Denvir writes about the recorded beating of Askia Sabur in West Philadelphia, but there are other videos of brutality in Philadelphia that have gone viral. 

1 In May 2008, a Fox 29 helicopter caught on camera the beating of three shooting suspects by a dozen or more Philly police. A grand jury decided against pressing charges. The NAACP blamed then-District Attorney Lynne Abraham for failing to prosecute. An arbitrator then overturned the firing and discipline of involved officers.

2 In September 2010, Officer Jimmy Leocal was recorded beating Askia Sabur in West Philadelphia. District Attorney Seth Williams' office decided against charging Leocal and instead charged Sabur with assaulting the police. Sabur was acquitted of all charges last month and is now suing the city.

3 In June 2012, a cameraphone recorded the beating of 18-year-old Marcus Warryton in Kensington, including a kick to the head after he was clearly handcuffed. Warryton still faces charges, including aggravated assault and resisting arrest. An illegal-gun-possession charge was dismissed for lack of evidence in November. Warryton received five staples to his head and two near his ear, according to the Philadelphia Tribune. Like Sabur, he was accused of reaching for an officer’s gun during the struggle.

4 In September 2012, Lt. Jonathan Josey was recorded punching Aida Guzman in the face at a street party following the Puerto Rican Day Parade. Josey was charged with simple assault and acquitted by Municipal Judge Patrick Dugan, who is married to a cop. Guzman plans to sue the city and is seeking a federal investigation.
