As suggested by the many, many breakup songs he’s released with Hüsker Dü and Sugar, not to mention his ever-growing number of solo albums, Bob Mould’s not the kind of guy who gets the band back together to relive old glories. So what was he to do when he found himself writing hard, Sugar-y pop tunes as the 20th anniversary of Copper Blue approached? The solution came, as it often has for Mould, in three parts: form another power trio (with Superchunk’s Jon Wurster and Verbow’s Jason Narducy), make a record (Silver Age, out this week on Merge), and reissue Sugar’s slim but substantial back catalog. On their current tour, Mould and his band are playing Copper Blue straight through, and chasing it with a selection of songs from throughout his career. That’s a good idea.
