At times, Metric’s synth rock sounds so measured, so exacting, that you almost forget how human the U.S.-Canadian quartet really is. Even frontwoman Emily Haines seems to need a reminder sometimes. Metric’s latest efforts — Synthetica (their fifth album) and the Cosmopolis soundtrack (a collaboration with composer Howard Shore) — continue their streak of stylish hooks and high-gloss ambiance. But Haines’ lyrics reveal a woman wrestling with questions about her place in the world: “Is this my life?” “Can you clone me?” “Can you read my mind?” Fortunately, the answers aren’t that elusive, and all the proof you’ll need of Metric’s humanity is in their warm stage presence.
