Heavy Metal Dance Fag

Fri.-Sat., Dec. 14-15, $20-$30, Annenberg Center, 36th and Walnut streets.

This 2011 Fringe Festival hit, revived through the Annenberg Center’s By-Local series, is a smart, satirical company-created musical comedy about asserting identity. South Philly dock worker Timmy (Terry Brennan, who also directs) hides his love of expressive, athletic dancing to ’80s hair-metal from bada-boom girlfriend Viola (Janice Rowland) and bada-bing best friend Vincenzo (Peter Smith). Can T-Bag, as Timmy naively calls himself, maintain the machismo his community demands, or will he embrace the spandex, glitter and feathered locks of his secret passion? City Paper has already called the show “joyous and poignant,” to which I add, “rockin’ great fun — and with a moral, no less!”
