Last night, sometime in the second half of the Sixers second playoff victory over the Pistons I sent a friend, who was at the game, the following text message:
"Dalembert is...good?"
I mean, I've got nothing against Sammy, but have always thought of him as the kind of big man who would get 10 and 10 against bad teams and then get eviscerated by good ones (I once wrote a profile of local sports personality Mike Missanelli; of Dalembert, he shouted, "He's got hands like ping-pong paddles!").
But there he was last night, throwing down dunks and dominating the boards in a Sixers blowout of the well-regarded Pistons. To me, even though it was at home, this victory was much more shocking than the first one. I think a lot of people thought this would be 5-game series, figuring the Pistons would need a wake-up call from the upstart team, and after they got it, would take care of business. But the Pistons got their wake-up call in game one, then woke up for game 2, and then last night...well, what exactly? Went back to sleep?
If Detroit keeps alternating waking games and sleeping ones, this series is gonna end 4-3 Sixers. But maybe we should consider another possibility: that the Sixers are in this series because they deserve to be.
