REEL TIME: Five of the best non-holiday holiday films

Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands begins with a woman explaining to her granddaughter why it snows on Christmas. From there Tim Burton takes us through the bizarre life story of artificial man Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp) and his love affair with Kim (Winona Ryder), the daughter of the family he’s living with. Although it’s set in sunny Florida, the movie takes place during the Christmas season, and in one touching scene Edward helps with the decorating by sculpting an ice angel. In doing so, he creates a flurry of snow under which Kim dances and laughs. It’s revealed that every year on Christmas Edward continues to make Kim sculptures despite their separation, hence the grandmother’s incredibly gloomy explanation as to why snow falls every year.
