Eyes Wide Shut

Kubrick’s final film, based on a novella by Arthur Schnitzler, was originally set during Mardi Gras but Kubrick decided to change it to Christmas. Sure, there are neon Christmas lights and heavily decorated trees in almost every scene, but you won’t hear one reference to Christmas or see any holiday cheer in this dark meditation on sexual relations. It was released during the summer, but one critic called it “the Christmas movie of 1999.”
