On Aug. 29, Rowan University Art Gallery will unveil a collection of more than 100 works of art by women artists in an exhibition titled “Groundbreaking: The Women of the Sylvia Sleigh Collection.”

The University acquired the artwork in March when Welsh-born artist Sylvia Sleigh donated a number of eclectic works from her private collection — everything from from abstract art and still-lifes to landscape paintings and photography. Shown for the first time in a gallery setting, Sleigh's pieces represent over 50 female artists, like Louise Bourgeois, Lila Katzen, and Diane Burko, whose work was recently shown at Locks Gallery.

Also on view are three 9-foot canvases from the historic “Sister Chapel” exhibit that took place in New York in 1978. "Sister Chapel" was an exhibition of paintings depicting famous or heroic women done by more than a dozen women artists. Alice Neel’s Bella Abzug and Sylvia Sleigh’s Lilith, two of the original pieces from "Sister Chapel," are among the works to be displayed.

A strong advocate of gender equality, Sleigh intended to pay tribute to women artists through her collection of feminist art. “She collected art by women artists because she wanted to draw attention to what they were accomplishing. She believed, and rightly so, that women still don’t have the kind of attention they deserve in the art world,” says Dr. Andrew Hottle, professor of art history at Rowan University. “When she [donated the] collection, the idea was that the University would continue to recognize and honor these women artists through exhibition of their works.” The collection will also serve as an invaluable resource for the university. According to Dr. Hottle, it will be used to educate students and other visitors about the importance and diversity of contemporary feminist art.

Mon., Aug. 29- Sat., Oct. 1, Opening Reception Tue., Sept. 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Rowan University Art Gallery, 201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, N.J., 856-256-4000, rowan.edu.
