MISS DOCENT: Algebra and design, the Titanic's 100th, and last chance for “Righteous Dopefiend.”

POSTED: Thursday, February 23, 2012, 4:00 PM

Impressive permanent collections may have put our area museums on the map, but it's the rotating exhibits that keep visitors coming back. Every Thursday, Abigail Minor updates you on the newest and most browse-worthy. This week: Algebra and design, the Titanic's hundreth anniversary, and the closing of “Righteous Dopefiend.”

Design Zone

Place your hands on a set of turntables, sample music, and crossfade until you discover the secret to the success of Gaga, Kanye, and Ke$ha. No, it’s not fashion — it’s math. Design Zone finds algebra in a bunch of creative activities — whether altering the height and speed of a roller coaster, competing in a virtual bike race that charts movement over time, creating the next Zelda sensation or dazzling the dance floor with a laser light show, algebraic variables are always there to keep you company. There is practically nothing in this exhibit you cannot touch, and multiple opportunities to send your work to jealous family and co-workers and show off your artistic prowess. Like it or not, math creeps into everything; we might as well have fun with it.

Through April 8, $12.50-$16.50, Franklin Institute, 222 N. 20th St., 215-448-1200, fi.edu.
