For 14 years, Philadelphia’s Art Sanctuary (628 S. 16th St., 215-232-4485) has been providing a much-needed outlet for African-American creativity. The gallery space functions as classroom, studio and community center while striving to unite communities in an artist’s sanctuary. For the month of February, the Center is getting creative with music and literature, offering new insights into black history.

Celebrating the history of black music, Art Sanctuary is hosting a community string showcase where attendees can join in on the fun. Partnering with The Philadelphia Guitar Summit, Art Sanctuary will host a few lessons in guitar lore, construction and African history from musician and educator Kala Jojo (pictured). Afterward, Jojo will provide a brief performance before allowing participants to grab their own strings for a communal musical experience. Sat., Feb 11, 2-4 p.m., $15.
