BOOKISH: Seeped in the spirit of global adventure

✚ Around the World

Jules Verne's 1873 fictional novel Around the World in Eighty Days inspired a generation of real
travelers up for the challenge. Over a century later, graphic novelist Matt Phelan follows three such
protagonists — former miner Thomas Stevens, pioneer reporter Nelly Bly, and retired sea captain Joshua Slocum — as they circumnavigate the globe. His vivid illustrations invite young readers to marvel at a historical period seeped in the spirit of global adventure. Come out for some family fun at Head House Books this Saturday, where Phelan will discuss the book and wow the kids with illustration-ondemand. 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., free, Head House Books, 619 S. Second St., headhouse.indiebound.com.
