✚ The Evening Hour

Carter Sickels' debut novel The Evening Hour is the story of trying to carve out a life in a dead-end
town. Set in a mining community in West Virginia, Cole Freeman leaves behind generations of miners
to work in a nursing home, where his kind demeanor is well-suited for the job. As his personal life
crumbles around him with the loss of a close friend and a family plagued by drug addiction, Cole is
somehow comforted by the more straightforward suffering of his patients. With a compelling voice
and a knack for creating vivid characters, this author is one to watch. Join him for a
discussion of the book. 6 p.m., free, Giovanni's Room, 345 S. 12th St., giovannisroom.com.
