Holler at my intellect!

Giovanni's Room, the adorable bookshop on 12th and Pine, takes its name from the 1956 James Baldwin novel about a man coming to terms with his gay identity. The book was one of the first to present issues of homosexuality in honest and empathetic terms, bringing the complex and private life of a gay man to a wider audience. Giovanni's Room (the bookstore) follows Baldwin's pioneering spirit, offering a queer literary space for readers of all sexualities. By showcasing works from gay, lesbian and transgendered authors, the store highlights material less prominent in mainstream bookstores. Tonight's Holler! Open Mic event is an opportunity to see the store after hours and get involved with this thriving literary community. A monthly event, the night is open to musicians, poets, writers and anyone with a story to share. If you're looking for a calmer segue into the typical Friday-night Gayborhood buzz, Giovanni's Room is the perfect homey storytelling locale. Come early if you want to sign up for a slot.

7 p.m., $5 suggested donation, Giovanni's Room, 345 S. 12th St., giovannisroom.com.
