The Wearing of the Green

For most of us, St. Paddy's Day is an excuse to eat green jello and drink a pint or two of Guinness. This year, the holiday gets the added bonus of falling on a Saturday, making the green beer taste that much sweeter. Today, somewhere between the fourth and fifth round of brewskys, might be a good time to contemplate why March 17 is marked by all these bizarre activities. If you're not totally blitzed, stumble over to the Free Library for a copy of the book with all the answers: Daryl Adair's The Wearing of the Green: A History of St. Patrick's Day. In his descriptive account, Adair brings you around the world, explaining the scope of green traditions in Irish communities far and wide and chronicling its evolution from a stuffy dinner for the Irish elite to one of the most publicly celebrated international holidays.
