BOOKISH: Don't mess with Jesse Ventura

POSTED: Thursday, April 7, 2011, 2:30 PM

Every Wednesday (and sometimes Thursday), Emily Apisa puts together a rundown of book-centric events that'll get you lit all week long.

Thursday: She may have been a part of the Lost Generation, but Philadelphians can find Gertrude Stein and her vast influence at The Kelly Writers House. In celebration of the notable expat and her cosmopolitan lifestyle, the event titled "Nothing Elegant: A Stein Celebration" will feature read-alouds, musical performances and interactive theater, all of which are tied together by a common thread: Gertrude Stein. The reception following the event maintains the spirit of the evening with period foods from Stein’s contemporary Alice B. Toklas’ cookbook. Thu., April 7, 6 p.m., free, Kelly Writers House, 3805 Locust Walk, 215-746-7636.

Friday: Though One Book, One Philadelphia has concluded for the year, The Rosenbach Museum & Library holds tight to inspiration this year’s book selection with its thematic tour titled Documenting Native American Culture. This hands-on tour investigates the portrayal of American Indians in literature. Guides will explain various topics including Pocahontas and John Smith’s relationship, the representation of American Indians in “The Last of the Mohicans” and the influence of American Indian authors. Fri., April 8, 3 p.m., $5-10, The Rosenbach Museum & Library, 2008-2010 Delancey Place, 215-732-1600.

Saturday: If his crossed arms and leather jackets weren’t enough, Jesse Ventura’s newest investigative book really gives off the "don’t mess with me" message. The pro-wrestler-turned-governor-turned-author is promoting his book 63 Documents the Government Does Not Want You to Read and is offering some non-partisan insight into the behind the scenes action of our government. Using real documents, Ventura exposes government initiatives that have been previously been kept hush-hush including a program to control human behavior and healthcare cover-ups. Sat., April 9, 2 p.m., free, Central Library, 1901 Vine St., 215-686-5322.

Sunday: Robert Wittman dedicated his life to recovering stolen art and antiques for the FBI, and his memoir Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World’s Stolen Treasures captures his exciting, and often dangerous, missions. For 20 years Wittman went undercover and traveled the globe tracking down priceless artifacts and bringing justice to the criminals responsible. Wittman comes to The Philadelphia Antiques Show to speak and sign copies of his book. Sun., April 10, 2 p.m., free with general admission, The Philadelphia Antiques Show, 5100 S. Broad St., 215-387-3500.

Monday:  Philly-based, but nationally syndicated, radio host and author Michael Smerconish will be interviewing author Jane Leavy about her newest book, The Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America’s Childhood. The biography weaves together anecdotes from the baseball giant’s personal and professional life, fleshing out his experiences with more than 500 interviews. Mon., April 11, 7 p.m., $20, Bryn Mawr Film Institute, 824 W. Lancaster Ave., 610-527-9898.

Tuesday: Listen as the authors of The Games That Changed The Game: The Evolution of the NFL in Seven Sundays talk about their picks for the most influential games of the past 50 years. Ron Jaworski, a former Eagle and current Monday Night Football analyst, teamed up with NFL Films’ Greg Cosell and David Plaut to give readers play-by-play commentary on the games that shaped football into the game we know, love and tailgate every fall. Tue., April 12, 7 p.m., $5, Gershman Y, 401 S. Broad St., 215-545-4400.
