Jews and Booze

Jewish Americans were some of the strongest opponents of Prohibition during the early 20th century. America's failed “noble experiment” was brought about with backing from Protestant groups who believed drinking could only lead to sin and more sin. Yet the Jewish religion dictates the consumption of alcohol during certain occasions. What's a Passover Seder without four cups of wine? Marni Davis' latest book, Jews and Booze: Becoming American in the Age of Prohibition, looks at the tension between Jews and Prohibitionists, chronicling a side of the roaring ‘20s rarely discussed in history books. Come to the Raven Lounge tonight for a discussion of the book and enjoy a complimentary drink, courtesy of the Gershman Y. (Don't worry, they'll be serving more than Manischewitz.)

7 p.m., $10, The Raven Lounge, 1718 Sansom St., gershmany.org
