Happy Birthday, Judy Blume!

If, like me, you had no older siblings to spill the beans on what it's like to grow up, you may have gotten much of your information from Judy Blume's unforgettable novel Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. For children of the '90s, Blume was a pioneer, tackling issues like menstruation, bullying and teenage sex that at the time were taboo in young adult literature. It's difficult to understate Blume's positive impact: Her vivid description and memorable wit lifted the veil and were a turning point for realism in YA lit, which made her and her work a regular target of religious organizations looking to weed “inappropriate” and “offensive” things out of school libraries. For Blume’s birthday, try heading to the library to re-read one of her classics, or check out her latest adult novel, Summer Sisters, about the complicated relationship between two longtime friends.
