Touring the past

After sinking into their daily routines, people can forget about the extraordinary historical and educational resources Philadelphia has to offer. Among these is the National Museum of American Jewish History, which welcomes Professor Nils Roemer tonight as part of the 2012 Penn Lecture Series in Judaic Studies for a talk about the revelatory and often painful experience of Jewish tourists in Germany after the Holocaust. Many former concentration camps are now educational sites where visitors come to grapple with the horrors that took place. Join Roemer, an expert in German-Jewish history, as he discusses how contemporary Germany tries to include Jewish tourists in a collaborative attempt to confront its painful past.

6:30 p.m., free (registration suggested), National Museum of American Jewish History, 101 S. Independence Mall East, upenn.edu.

Have a lit event you'd like to see featured in an upcoming Bookish? Email the author at nina@citypaper.net.
